The Commodore 1650, also known as the \u201cAUTOMODEM\u201d, is Commodore\u2019s first full modem directly connected to the phone line. It supports pulse dialing in software and 300 baud duplex connections.<\/p>\n

On the front, there is the VIC-20\/C64 user port connector and an activity LED.<\/p>\n

On the left, there is:
\n* the \u201cLINE\u201d jack that is supposed to be connected to the telephone network
\n* the \u201cPHONE\u201d jack for connecting an existing telephone
\n* a D\/T switch. In D mode, the modem takes over the phone line, in T mode, \u201cLINE\u201d gets passed through to the telephone.
\n* an A\/O switch. When making a modem call, it is to be put into the \u201cO\u201d (originate) position, and when answering a call, it is to be put into the \u201cA\u201d (answer) position.<\/p>\n

On the right, there is an H\/F switch to select Half Duplex (\u201cH\u201c) or Full Duplex (\u201cF\u201c).<\/p>\n

The design of the AUTOMODEM is basically the same as its\u00a0predecessor\u2019s<\/a>, with the extra circuitry added to allow it work with the phone line directly instead of acting as the handset of an existing telephone.<\/p>\n
